Overview
The all-inclusive Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya overlooks a two-mile stretch of beach along Akumal Bay, neighbouring one of the world’s largest coral reefs. Designed for adults only, this romantic Mexican retreat is ideal for couples seeking a relaxing beach holiday. You’ll have access to unlimited premium drinks and multiple dining options within the resort, and suites are beautifully decorated, with whirlpool tubs for two. Other highlights include an extensive activities programme, three impressive swimming pools and a luxurious Secrets Spa.
Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya sits in Akumal on Mexico’s dreamy Riviera Maya coastline. The resort offers direct access to a white-sand beach, bordering calm waters that are protected by the bay. The world-famous coral reef lies just 150 metres from the beach, presenting unparalleled snorkelling and diving opportunities. This barrier reef in Akumal, which means ‘land of turtles’ in Mayan, is home to a large green sea turtle population. Two miles away, the impressive Cenote y Laguna Yalku also presents wonderful snorkelling opportunities. You can also visit the original Mayan ruins of Xel-Há, just six and a half miles from the resort – or the city of Cancun, around 64 miles away. Meanwhile, Cancun International Airport is 57 miles from the property.
The 434 spacious suites are decorated in a contemporary Mexican style, enhanced by traditional Mayan artwork, La Huasteca-style textiles, natural stone tiles and warm gold accents. Each sumptuous suite features a whirlpool bathtub, a complimentary mini-bar and a private terrace or balcony with views of the tropical landscape, pools or Caribbean Sea. You can upgrade to a suite with swim-out access or choose a Preferred Club Suite with extra benefits – including a daily a la carte breakfast at the Seaside Grill and access to a private lounge, which serves afternoon hors d’oeuvres, exquisite desserts and fine liquors. You'll also enjoy complimentary access to the hydrotherapy circuit at the spa once during your stay.

Other facilities
The beautifully landscaped, tranquil grounds contain over 4,000 different plant species. Winding pathways, edged by lush lawns and palapa-roofed buildings, lead to three separate swimming pools: a freeform lagoon pool, a large main pool and an infinity pool with a swim-up bar and ocean views. There are also two separate outdoor whirlpools, and poolside service is readily available.
Spend days on the white sandy beach, relaxing under swaying palm trees or swimming in the crystal-clear bay. A few sun loungers and palapa-style umbrellas line the beach, available on a first-come-first-serve basis. However, you can reserve a beach cabana for the day for an extra charge. One of the world's largest barrier reefs is also just offshore, giving you the chance to snorkel with sea turtles or book an unforgettable scuba diving trip. You can book excursions in resort for a supplementary charge, knowing that the hotel encourages safe and responsible snorkelling practices. During nesting season, which is usually between May and November, the hotel also removes obstacles on the beach and attempts to reduce light and noise pollution so that turtle nesting areas remain undisturbed.
The resort’s extensive activities programme ensures that there’s always something to do. You can play beach volleyball or tennis, practise archery, take a kitchen tour with the chefs or explore the island by bicycle. You can also sign up for dancing, Spanish lessons and cocktail-making classes or take advantage of discounted green fees at select golf clubs nearby (check locally for details). In the evening, watch concerts under the stars, catch shows at the on-site theatre or sit back and listen to live music.
At the Secrets Spa, wind down with an indulgent aromatherapy massage, a soothing body wrap or an after-sun facial. Couples can book a side-by-side massage, while the beauty salon offers a range of manicure and pedicure treatments. Nestled in the tropical landscape, the spa includes an outdoor hydrotherapy circuit, reflexology pool, sauna and steam room. You’ll also find a well-equipped fitness centre with Life Fitness machines, exercise balls and free weights. Group classes, such aqua spin, aerobics and yoga are also organised in resort.

Dining options include an international buffet-style restaurant, six a la carte restaurants, a laidback cafe and a beachside grill - each with no reservations required. For breakfast, you can choose fresh baked goods, made-to-order omelettes, pancakes and tropical fruits from the buffet at Market Café, or simply head to Coco Café for a coffee and pastry. The Seaside Grill also serves an a la carte breakfast to Preferred Club Suite guests and opens to everyone for lunch and dinner.
At lunchtime, you can savour light bites from the Barefoot Grill, grilled specialities at the Seaside Grill or return to Market Café for international buffet-style dishes. Five speciality restaurants open for dinner only, including the French-themed Bordeaux restaurant, an Asian fusion restaurant and a gourmet seafood restaurant which overlooks the Caribbean Sea. There’s also Portofino, which specialises in Italian cuisine, and an authentic Mexican menu at El Patio.
Sip refreshing frozen cocktails from the swim-up bar or grab drinks at the rustic beach bar. A variety of beverages are also available at the poolside bar, sports bar or chic lobby bar. In the evening, enjoy your favourite tipple at the music lounge or order your interval drinks at the theatre bar. The Preferred Club Lounge has a private bar exclusively for those staying in Preferred Club Suites.
