Sorrento holidays

Legends say sirens once lived in the Sorrentine peninsula – today, those who follow calls to Sorrento find hypnotic views, enchanting resorts and mesmerising plates of mozzarella-topped gnocchi waiting for them. This Southern Italian town promises plenty of opportunities for ‘passeggiatas’ (leisurely strolls) along quaint streets and silver-pebble marinas. See bottles of limoncello lining up under shop awnings and fishermen hauling in fresh catches on the coast. Finish every evening in a clifftop restaurant with views of Mount Vesuvius rising above the Bay of Naples.

Let the land of sirens lure you in

Sorrento’s spring breeze is perfumed with citrus. Its summer sun shines down on beach club umbrellas. Taste a local lemon – juicy, tart and a little sweet – and savour a taste of local life – gentle, leisurely and very sweet. When you’re ready to explore beyond the town, pop to Naples for a slice of pizza or admire ancient ruins in nearby Pompeii. Book flights now.

Listen to the songs of Sorrento. You won’t actually hear sirens singing, but you’ll likely hear a mandolin or two and the odd snippet of ‘Torna a Surriento.’ In Old Town, the zip of a Vespa and the call of a friendly shop owner set the scene. Seek shade in little gardens and hear birds serenading the sea. Closer to the bay, lapping waves can be heard even from the top of plunging cliffs. These are the sounds that will keep calling you ‘back to Sorrento’. Book your flights to Naples today.

Carefully selected Sorrento hotels

Many of the best hotels in Sorrento overlook the Bay of Naples. At Grand Hotel Ambasciatori, you can take in views of Sorrento’s coast from a breakfast table, swim in a pool surrounded by flourishing gardens and spend sunny afternoons on a sundeck at a private rocky beach. Bellevue Syrene also flaunts terraces stretching across a cliff face and a sundeck stretching over the sea. This elegant property was built on the ruins of a Roman villa. You can reach the sundeck, which has steps descending into the sea, by walking along a Roman passageway carved out in caves.

Hotel Mediterraneo Sorrento is another five-star property sitting pretty on a clifftop with views of Vesuvius. Luxury can be found everywhere in this hotel – from the spa in the candle-filled caves to the cocktail and champagne bar on the roof. There’s even a lift that will take you directly to La Marinella beach. Meanwhile, Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria is surrounded by a five-acre park. Rumour has it the Roman emperor Augustus owned a villa on this clifftop spot commanding vistas of the Bay of Naples. Gaze at grand views from the Michelin-starred restaurant and get pampered at the spa set in a converted 19th Century greenhouse.

The Best Western Hotel La Solara is less than a mile from Puolo’s beach which is brimming with sunbeds and umbrellas. If you want to sunbathe at the hotel, head to the garden surrounded by lemon and olive groves or sit out on the deck by the heated pool. The four-person rooms with double beds and bunk beds are great for families.

Sorrento holiday FAQs

  1. Take a passeggiata along Corso Italia. Sorrento’s main street is lined with shops and restaurants in buildings the colour of limoncello and meloncello. Flowers spill over balconies and people spill onto pavements, sitting at tables or standing in line for scoops of gelato. Look up to see the triple-tiered bell tower of Sorrento Cathedral staring down at you as you approach the main square.
  2. At Piazza Tasso, Sorrento’s central square, people-watching with an espresso in hand is a popular pastime. You’ll find the usual suspects here – buzzy bars and restaurants luring in guests with seafood and twirls of pasta. But, if you know where to look, you’ll also find a hidden valley. Walk a couple of minutes down Viale Enrico Caruso and you’ll stumble on a view of Valley of the Mills. Look down into the valley to see an ancient wheat mill standing proud, abandoned by all but clambering foliage.
  3. Via san Cesareo is a narrower street than Corso Italia but it’s just as lively. Running parallel to the main street, it’s packed with small shops displaying lemon biscotti, lemon soap, lemon granita, lemon-patterned dresses and pretty much anything else you can think of related to lemons. Unsurprisingly, this is a great place to try ice cold limoncello: pop into Limonoro for samples and souvenirs.
  4. The clifftop park Villa Comunale di Sorrento is always popular at sunset. Head straight to the terrace for a mesmeric view of the Bay of Naples with Mount Vesuvius looming in the background. From here you can walk or take a lift down to the beach clubs in Marina Piccola – but before you do, duck into nearby Chiesa di San Francesco and admire its vine-draped cloisters. In the summer, you’ll usually find the courtyard filled with quartet music and couples swapping marital vows.
  5. Lounging at a beach club is one of the best things to do in Sorrento. You won’t find vast swathes of golden sand here, but you will find plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas facing the sea. Many beach clubs at Marina Piccola and Marina Grande boast sundecks with steps going down into the sea. For something different, swim in Bagni Regina Giovanna: a spellbinding cove overlooked by Roman ruins.
  • The Circumvesuviana train takes around 40 minutes to get from Sorrento to Pompeii, the once bustling Roman city that was buried in volcanic ash when Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD79. See ancient ruins and spy graffiti – from election slogans to dirty jokes – left by locals who lived here millennia ago. The UNESCO-listed archaeological park is vast, so allow plenty of time to wander around its villas, temples, theatres, bathhouses and other relics of ancient civilisation.
  • It’s easy to get from Sorrento to the Amalfi Coast. Fashionable Positano is only around 10 miles away by car – or you can take a ferry to see the town’s colourful houses gazing down at you on approach. Wander around narrow alleys, pop into an artisan workshop for a made-to-measure pair of sandals and savour a lemon granita to see if you can taste the difference between an Amalfi Coast lemon and a Sorrento one. Then follow one of the many streets stretching down towards the sea and bag a sunbed on the main beach, Spiaggia Grande.
  • Take the ferry from Sorrento to Capri. From Capri’s port, join a tour from Marina Grande to the Blue Grotto – you’ll be transferred to a rowboat small enough to squeeze into a cave full of neon blue water. Return to the port and board a funicular headed up the hill to Capri town. See shining window displays and sit on cafe terraces with views of the sea tumbling below limestone cliffs. Make your way up to Anacapri and board a chairlift to the highest point on the island. Gaze at Capri from above, see the Faraglioni rock formations and spy Ischia island across the bay.
