1. Explore the ancient ruins of Ephesus, home to Greek and Roman civilisations for hundreds of years. Today you can tour the remains of grand civic buildings, as well as ordinary shops, schools and temples. Visit the Library of Celsus with its intricately carved facade, and the Terraced Houses where the Roman elite lived, chock full of mosaics, frescoes and marble. Elsewhere look out for a vast open-air theatre, a Roman bathhouse, and many monumental fountains and gateways. Nearby Izmir, Turkey’s third-largest city, is famed for its fresh seafood, historic sights, bazaars and stunning coastal scenery.
2. A visit to a traditional Turkish hammam is another must-do. These grand bathhouses are a feast for the senses, complete with marble interiors lit by celling skylights. Some of the finest examples are in Istanbul, while the baths in Bursa are fed by natural thermal springs. A vigorous scrub down and a turn in the revitalising steam bath will soon have you feeling like new.
3. Trek through the unique landscape of Cappadocia, with its canyons, fairytale chimneys and countless eye-popping rock formations. Make time to explore underground cities like Derinkuyu and Kaymakli, complete with subterranean settlements including animal stables and facilities to cook, worship and even make wine.
4. Turkey has many colourful bazaars. Perhaps the most famous is Istanbul’s dazzling Grand Bazaar, though you’ll find more authentic versions in places like Gaziantep and Sanliurfa. In addition to these covered markets with their dizzying array of produce and goods, try to find time to visit impromptu open-air markets called ‘pazars’ where locals shop for all manner of items at pocket pleasing prices.
5. Hike the Lycian Way, a walking trail spanning 335 miles between Fethiye and Antalya. The route takes in a truly diverse range of environments including coastal cliffs, rural villages, beach towns, ancient ruins and mountains. Best seen in spring or autumn, the trail can sometimes be challenging but it’s worth it for the views. Some of the many highlights of the hike include the rock tombs of Myra, the ruins of ancient Olympus and the ‘burning rock’ of Chimaera.
