Hawaii holiday FAQs

  1. Visit Pearl Harbor’s USS Arizona Memorial in Honolulu on Oahu. Take a Navy-operated boat to the memorial, which sits above the sunken USS Arizona battleship, and look down at the remains of the ship in the water below. Reflect in the memorial rooms and learn about the events that unfurled on December 7, 1941.
  2. Find Kauapea Beach, also known as Secret Beach, on Kauai. You’ll have to hike down an unmarked trail to reach this hidden stretch of honey-coloured sand, but you’ll be rewarded with views of crystalline water and verdant, tree-covered cliffs. Take a scenic walk on the sand and spot lava rocks glistening in the sun.
  3. Visit a black-sand beach. Sand on the Hawaiian Islands can range from coconut white to midnight black, with some beaches even boasting green or red swathes. Punaluu Black Sand Beach on Big Island is a popular choice, known for its dramatic views and the sea turtles slowly stretching their legs on shore (keep your distance and respect the wildlife).
  4. Take a tour of Kualoa Ranch. This 4,000-acre private nature reserve is on some of Oahu’s historically sacred land. You might recognise the emerald mountain range or Ka’a’awa Valley floor from blockbusters such as Jurassic Park and Godzilla – look out for giant footprints on the Hollywood Movie Sites Tour. Alternatively, explore the local ecosystem and learn about the importance of the kalo plant to Hawaiian culture on a Malama Experience.
  • Spend plenty of time on Maui’s beaches. Sun seekers spread out on Big Beach and windsurfers dance on the waves at Hoʻokipa. Many Maui hotels sit along glittering shores, including Outrigger Kaanapali Beach Resort with its Pacific Ocean views. If you’re after lavish beachside luxury, stay at Grand Wailea set among 40 acres of tropical scenery.
  • Oahu is home to Hawaii’s capital, Honolulu. This island is packed with iconic spots: in Waikiki, the sea rolls for surfers seeking the perfect wave in front of Diamond Head’s silhouette. Some of the best Honolulu hotels are found here, including Sheraton Waikiki, where the pools have views of Diamond Head and Hyatt Centric Waikiki Beach, where the rooms have views of the mountains or the ocean. Make time to learn about Hawaiian cultural and natural history at the impressive Bishop Museum and see the USS Arizona Memorial while you’re on the island.
  • The island of Hawaii, otherwise known as Big Island, is larger than all of the other Hawaiian islands combined. The views here are suitably immense: look up at bubbling volcanoes in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, babbling waterfalls in Akaka Falls State Park and brilliant stars in the night sky above Mauna Kea (one of the best stargazing spots in the world). Savour the small details, too, like cups of Kona coffee and bowls of multicoloured shave ice. Of course, there are also plenty of beaches piled with miles of gold sand – as well as a few featuring black sand.
  • Kauai is called the ‘Garden Isle’ for a good reason: lush greenery blankets valleys and mountains, from peaks to plunging gorges, all over this island. See the Na Pali Coast with its sharp pinnacles and Waimea Canyon with its bronze and hibiscus-red hues. Lean into the island’s laid-back lifestyle at Hanalei Bay, where tropical trees and soft, warm sand spread out under the sun. While you’re in Kauai’s North Shore area, take a guided tour of Limahuli Garden & Preserve to learn about Hawaiian stewardship.
  • If you’re looking to experience the best of islands like Oahu on a budget, peruse our cheap holidays to Hawaii. Hilton Garden Inn Waikiki Beach is less than a mile from Waikiki beach, making it a convenient choice for your Hawaii holiday package. The hotel’s rooftop promises relaxation by the pool and Mai Tais at the bar. Holiday Inn Express Waikiki is also around a mile from the beach and offers complimentary daily breakfast for all guests. If you want to be even closer to the ocean, Alohilani Resort Waikki Beach is just across the street from Waikiki Beach. The resort’s saltwater infinity pool overlooks the famous stretch of sand and makes for a great place to unwind – especially when local musicians perform live on the deck. Experience that laid-back feeling that makes holidays in Hawaii so special.
  • If you’re planning a big Hawaii family holiday in Honolulu, Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort on the shores of Duke Kahanamoku Beach has a big bundle of amenities. There are five pools as well as a wide saltwater lagoon – ideal for gentle swimming – and you can even catch a fireworks display over Waikiki Beach once a week. Alternatively, if you’re staying on Maui, check into Hyatt Regency Maui Resort And Spa facing Ka'anapali Beach. Cool off at the half-acre pool, zip down the lava tube water slide and take your young kids to play at the children’s water playground. Spend an evening at the on-site luau to see a traditional imu ceremony and taste dishes like poke.
