Croatia holidays

See thousands of beautiful sights in Croatia. Stay in seaside cities surrounded by ancient walls and traipse through hilltop towns spilling over with vineyards. Make the most of the 1,000-mile-long coastline by spending beach days dipping in and out of the intensely blue Adriatic. To see even more seascapes, cross waves on a catamaran between some of the country’s 1,000-plus islands.

Magical cities and a mega coast

Seen the cities? You’ve only just cracked Croatia’s surface. Spend time on a glamorous island like Hvar on the Dalmatian Coast or head to a charming town in Istria for truffles and wine.

In Dubrovnik dramatic views of cliffs bracing the sea and Byzantine towers peering over red-roofed buildings look like something straight out of a fantasy. Split is equally enchanting with its Roman ruins and promenade. Then there’s Zagreb, where you’re never far from a museum or outdoor terrace – experience spica, the Saturday morning ritual of drinking coffee in the city centre, on your trip.

City breaks, beach holidays and adventure trips can all be planned in Croatia, book flights to Croatia and discover terracotta seaside towns, with their story-telling architecture and tales of historic empires.

Our recommended holidays in Croatia

Holiday on Croatia's coast and visit the ancient, UNESCO-listed cities of Dubrovnik, Split and Trogir. On the Croatian islands, visit the Venetian-era port towns of Korula, Hvar and Rab, on islands of the same name. In Croatia's capital, Zagreb, visit the medieval hillside Gornji Grad (Upper Town) with its winding cobbled streets.

Choose a stay with dramatic scenery and opulent accommodation, at the Hotel Croatia Cavtat. Sitting pretty along the coast on its own peninsula, this lavish hotel will take your breath away, for more reasons than just the view.

Savour a chic four-star retreat when you book a spot at Hotel Kompas Dubrovnik. Situated beside the tranquillity of Lapad Bay, this stylish hotel is close to the wonders of Dubrovnik’s Old Town.

The Bellevue Dubrovnik offers a clifftop sanctuary. With its serene spa, sparkling ocean views and sensational sunsets, this place offers an enchanting break away.

Croatia holiday FAQs

  1. Walk Dubrovnik’s city walls to see the city’s tangle of old town lanes and the Adriatic Sea. Pass a range of scenes from little courtyards where hanging laundry shimmies in the coastal breeze to Baroque buildings that’ll make you feel like you’ve just stepped into an epic fantasy. Game of Thrones fans will recognise sights from the show – this is King’s Landing. Go early to avoid crowds.
  2. Make a beeline for one of Croatia’s more than 1,000 beaches. Brac’s Zlatni Rat beach, also known as the Golden Horn, is an A-lister on Croatia’s coast with clear water and pine-fringed paths. If you’re looking for a quieter scene, try nearby Murvica beach. Hvar’s got trendy beach clubs and secluded coves, while city breakers might opt for Banje in Dubrovnik or Bacvice in Split.
  3. Visit one of the world’s best-preserved Roman amphitheatres. The Pula Arena has witnessed gladiator battles, medieval knight tournaments and modern-day rockers like Sting enrapture audiences of thousands. The oval amphitheatre stands near the city’s seafront and is one of the best things to see in Istria.
  4. Order a cappuccino inside a Roman emperor’s retirement palace. In Split, Diocletian’s Palace takes over much of the old town, its thick-walled complex home to cafes, shops, bars and even an Egyptian sphynx. When the sun is strong, enter the cool basement to browse craft stalls for locally made souvenirs. This is the same basement where Daenerys kept her dragons chained in Game of Thrones.
  5. Follow the wooden boardwalks in Plitvice Lakes National Park to huge lakes cascading into one another and waterfalls tumbling down forested slopes. This UNESCO-listed site is the biggest national park in the country, with 16 large lakes and many more little ones reflecting meadowy, mountainous surroundings.

Visit the Dalmatia region on Croatia's south coast, home to medieval port towns backed by rugged mountains. Explore Croatia's scattered Dalmatian Islands on a beach holiday and stay at Le Meridien Lav in Split. North along the coast, Kvarner boasts Croatia's oldest purpose-built holiday resort, Opatija.
