Indian Ocean flight FAQs

A flight from London to the Seychelles, via Doha, takes approximately 14 hours. London to the Maldives’ Male-Valena International Airport takes around 10 hours and 20 minutes. Flights from London to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in Mauritius takes approximately 12 hours.

British Airways flies to Indian Ocean destinations from London Gatwick Airport and London Heathrow Airport.

The cheapest flights to the Seychelles are typically found outside the peak season, between June and August. For good deals on flight to the Maldives, look beyond the most popular period in December to March. The wet season starts in April and ends in November, but both months experience only light showers and still have lots of sun. Mauritius offers a mild tropical maritime climate throughout the year. The cheapest time to fly to Mauritius is from October to March, which spans part of the humid summer season. January and February are typically the warmest months, while February and March are the wettest months. Luckily, the rain usually comes in short sharp bursts, still allowing you plenty of sunshine.

The best time to visit the Seychelles is April to May and October to November, when the weather is at its best and conditions are ideal for diving and snorkelling. Mauritius enjoys year-round sunshine, even in the winter months between June and August, with the driest period falling between September and November. May to September is a great time for surfing when there are higher winds. Meanwhile, the Maldives’ dry season runs between December and March, with temperatures around 30°C and the humidity at its lowest.

Indian Ocean destinations are renowned for luxury, but there are also affordable options alongside the five-star hotels and private islands. If you’re visiting the Seychelles, the main islands of Mahe, Praslin and La Digue all have self-catering accommodation and family-run guesthouses. Mauritius also offers a range of budget and mid-range hotels, and if you’re searching for cheaper places to stay across the Maldives, opt for the local islands rather than the larger, tourist resorts.

The Maldives’ Malé Airport isn’t actually on Malé. Instead, you’ll land on Hulhule next door, with a fleet of speedboats and seaplanes waiting to take you onwards. It’s best to book a transfer in advance.

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) is located on the main port island of Mauritius. Public buses on Mauritius are very affordable, but for the quickest journey to your hotel it’s best to take a taxi.

The Seychelles’ three main islands are all connected by ferry, with journey times ranging between 15 and 90 minutes. A public bus service runs on Mahe and Preslin, while the best way to get around La Digue is by bicycle.

You can also hire a car with British Airways if you want to see more of what Indian Ocean destinations have to offer. You’ll receive great benefits, with all mandatory charges included and 24-hour customer support, plus you’ll collect Avios points on every rental.

‘No Shoes. No News.’ That’s the mantra of one island in the Maldives, and it perfectly describes the feeling of truly getting away from it all when you visit the islands in the Indian Ocean. Unwind on some of the best beaches in the world, or dine out in waterfront restaurants where guests arrive barefoot and there’s sand on the floor. Wherever you go, you’ll find an abundance of kids' clubs, incredible watersports and thrilling activities both inland and offshore.
