Lapland Ivalo flight FAQs

Flights from London Gatwick to Lapland’s Ivalo Airport take around four hours.

We fly to Lapland Ivalo from December to February, and while prices will vary throughout this period, you may find it’s cheaper to fly outside of the peak Christmas and New Year dates.

Prices in Finland can be high – especially if you visit the main ski resorts and holiday villages of Lapland. However, you’ll find a variety of restaurants, bars and activities to suit every budget and you may save on your trip by visiting outside of the peak Christmas dates. Santa sticks around all year round so any little ones travelling with you won’t miss out.

You’ll need to pay for any sledding or winter sports activities, but much of Lapland’s appeal is in its wild, natural beauty. And of course, the northern lights are one of nature’s most spectacular sights. If the skies are clear, you’ll have an excellent chance of spotting them – and you won’t pay a penny.

Ivalo Airport is just 10 minutes from Ivalo’s village centre, so it’s a straightforward journey by taxi once you land in Finland. If you’re heading straight to Saariselka from the airport, you can take a taxi or a bus, which both take around 30 minutes.

Once you’re in Saariselka, you can walk between the main attractions. If you're heading further afield, taxis are available – and you can always book a sledding tour or go cross-country skiing to explore the countryside.

You can also hire a car with British Airways if you want to see more of what Finland has to offer. You’ll receive great benefits, with all mandatory charges included and 24-hour customer support, plus you’ll collect Avios points on every rental.

While Ivalo and northern Finland offer visitors plenty to do and see all year round, winter is when Lapland truly sparkles. A blanket of snow covers the region from late October until at least March and you’ll find scenes worth of a fairy tale in every direction. The festive period also coincides with the Polar Night, when the sun sets in late November and doesn’t reappear fully until early January. During this time the cool blue light of the afternoon has an otherworldly quality, illuminating the snow-tipped forests. It’s also the best time of year – and one of the best spots – to watch the northern lights in all their glory. Combined with a trip to deliver wish lists to Santa in person, Lapland sets the scene for a winter break to remember.

Citizens of the UK and Ireland and EU passport holders do not need a visa to visit Finland. If you hold a passport from a country or territory outside of these areas, you may need to apply for a visa before you travel. You can find out more about visa requirements for all the countries we fly to at the IATA Travel Centre.
