Albania holidays

Explore the virtually unspoilt mountains of the Albanian Alps. Holiday by Albania's pristine sandy beaches such as Vlora and Dhermi along the beautiful Adriatic and Ionian Sea coastlines. Visit villages and towns almost untouched by the passing years. Sip a glass of local raki (strong alcoholic aperitif made with plums and grapes) at any bar or restaurant.

Exciting adventures await in this Balkan gem

The country warmly welcomes visitors who are increasingly drawn here not only for its raft of natural attractions but also for its extremely good value for money. In fact, a culture of helping and welcoming others is even instilled among Albanians via the notion of ‘Besa’: literally translated as ‘pledge of honour’, it enshrines a certain duty of hospitality.

Holidays in Albania allow you to discover a largely untouched paradise. Explore the Butrint National Park, home to an UNESCO World Heritage site which has been occupied for at least 50,000 years. These days it’s home to some of the country's best beaches whose white sands and turquoise waters make it ideal for sun seekers. Discover relics from Roman and Greek civilisations and enjoy sampling the harvest of olive oil, lemons and tangerines grown here.

The capital Tirana is one of the most enticing cities in the Balkans with lots of green spaces and street art, cool dining options and quirky museums on practically every corner. The port city of Durres has a pleasing mix of old and new, including 10 kilometres of beachfront, an ancient castle and perhaps Albania’s largest amphitheatre. Book your flights to Tirana and start exploring.

Albania holiday FAQs

  1. Take a stroll through Korce, often cited as the prettiest place in Albania. Check out the old bazaar with its 13th Century Ottoman architecture before you savour a potent glass of raki in the communist-themed Kooperativa bar.
  2. Beach bums will want to visit Dhermi, one of the pearls of the Albanian Riviera. Home to several cool summer music festivals, you can also discover idyllic beaches and trendy beach bars which make it a magnet for a younger crowd.
  3. Discover a raft of activities for adventure seekers at the hub town of Permet near the Greek border. Set on a bend in the fast-flowing Vjosa River, the town caters for keen mountain bikers and water sports lovers. Take a detour here to experience the thermal springs of Benje and an Ottoman-era bridge.
  4. Hire a bike to blend in with locals in the northern city of Shkodra, where most people pootle about on two wheels. Pedal your way past Liqeni i Shkodres to drink in sublime lakeside views and then call in at the Rozafa Castle shrouded in ancient myths and legends.
  5. The village of Lin, set on the shores of the Lake Ohrid, is the perfect place to spend a peaceful time drinking in the views and tasting fresh fish from the abundant  waters. Take a hilltop hike to an archaeological site resplendent with well-preserved mosaics in the 6th Century church.
  • Discover charming mountainside villages such as Gjirokaster where you can wander amid cobbled streets festooned with small, family-run cafes serving local delicacies such as qifqi fried rice balls.
  • For the ultimate hike consider the trail between Valbona and Theth. This takes you between two alpine villages and past two national parks in the north. This trek through the ‘Accursed Mountains’ has plenty to challenge even the most seasoned walkers.
  • Cool off in natural wonders like the Blue Eye, a 50-metre-deep natural spring and cave outside of Saranda which resembles the pupil of a human eye. Make your way there on a 30-minute walk from the car park alongside a stunning lake and river.
  • Quiet yet compelling seaside resorts include the likes of Ksamil, dubbed ‘Europe’s Maldives’ for its diverse range of beaches devoid of tourist crowds even in summer, with serene, clear waters in the Ionian Sea. You’ll find an increasingly sophisticated food scene here with many fresh farm-to-table establishments offering good vegetarian options and regional specialties.
  • To explore a good chunk of the country pack yourself into a furgon, reliable intercity minivans that stop on demand. Partake in a xhiro, a time-honoured tradition of taking a long sunset walk along pedestrianised streets, which is great for people-watching as locals catch up with each other and share their news.
