Langkawi Holidays

Named after the red eagles that soar across its skies, Langkawi is a bundle of islands brimming with white sand beaches, limestone cliffs and rainforest-carpeted mountains. Holidays here usually consist of mornings exploring mangrove-filled national parks and afternoons walking across sun-baked sand. The whole archipelago is a UNESCO Geopark, home to rocks from the most ancient continent, so soak up the natural beauty – paddle in a waterfall where legends say fairies live and seek out coral reefs under clear water.

Discover calm beaches and lively rainforests

In addition to eagles, you can spot flamboyant butterflies and rare lemurs flying through Langkawi’s air – if you know where to look.

Make like a tropical bird and fly in a cable car headed to the top of Machinchang mountain on the main island. Take in immense views of the ‘Jewel of Kedah’ before delving into its singing jungles and watching waves dance in the Andaman Sea.

Memories of Langkawi’s stunning scenery will stay with you forever – but you should do everything you can to leave no trace of your visit. Respect the rainforests and their rare inhabitants. Never approach animals or try to feed them. Treat the islands well and they might just reveal their mysteries to you. Book your flights to langkawi now.

Langkawi holiday FAQs

  • There are 99 islands in the archipelago, but you’ll start on Pulau Langkawi. This is home to Gunung Machinchang and Gunung Raya, two mountains believed to have once been giants.
  • Near the main town Kuah, you’ll find the tomb of Mahsuri, a woman said to have cursed Langkawi for seven generations. Luckily the curse has run its course and lovely Langkawi is ready to impress again.
  1. At Panorama Langkawi, cable cars zip through mist and treetops to the top of a mountain and a bridge sweeps through the rainforest. Board a gondola headed to the top of Machinchang mountain – choose a glass-bottomed gondola to stare down at the forested valley under your feet. Stand on a viewing platform to see striking rock pinnacles and chasms before looking out to islands in the Andaman Sea and, further in the distance, the edge of Southern Thailand. Then cross the 125 metre-long SkyBridge at the peak to feel like a giant from one of Langkawi’s legends.
  2. Cool off in a natural rock pool and listen to waterfalls roar. Telaga Tujuh, also known as Seven Wells, is made up of seven pools connected to seven waterfalls. They sit near the base of Mount Machinchang, surrounded by a dense jungle where macaques leap between vines and hornbills perch in treetops. The pools are split into two sections – the upper pools and the lower pools – with a vertical waterfall between them. Local legends claim this is where fairies bathe.
  3. Kilim Geoforest Park is heaving with mangroves and limestone hills. See if you can spot a sea hibiscus flashing bright yellow in the morning and let fluttering butterflies and whirring kingfishers catch your eye. Look up and you might even spot an eagle gliding overhead. Kilim Geoforest Park is also home to bat-filled caves, including one in the shape of a crocodile, and fossils that are hundreds of millions of years old. Look out for 500-million-year-old limestone rock formations emerging from the riverbeds.
  4. Lounge on one of Langkawi’s blonde beaches. Stretch your legs on a private stretch of sand at your resort or walk along a buzzing public beach. Spend a day doing some duty-free shopping in Cenang Mall before popping over to Cenang Beach, where the sand is lined with hawker stalls and the waves are skimmed by banana boats. Come evening, fireworks light up the sky and street performers try their best to draw in an audience. Tanjung Rhu is another popular beach with powdery sand. At low tide, you can even walk from Tanjung Rhu to other nearby islands.
  5. Snap a photo of the iconic eagle statue spreading its wings in Dataran Lang (Eagle Square) and casting its eyes over ferry boats coming into Kuah harbour. The statue is surrounded by water fountains and vibrant tiles, and it’s lit in bright colours when the sun goes down. Just a short walk away is Legenda Park dotted with manmade lakes and sculptures depicting scenes from Langkawi’s legends.
  • Many of the best hotels in Langkawi sit on the main island. The five-star Berjaya Langkawi Resort is surrounded by lush rainforest. This resort on Burau Bay, near Gunung Machinchang, stands out with its collection of water villas – meaning you can stay right on top of the sea.
  • If a villa stay in Langkawi sounds ideal, The Danna Langkawi Luxury Resort and Beach Villas is another great option close to Gunung Machinchang. The villas at this five-star resort come with their own private infinity pools and decks with direct access to the beach.
  • The St Regis Langkawi on the south east side of the main island is a luxury resort boasting five stars and butler service. This serene retreat near Kuah is hugged by rainforest and a sandy beach – stay for the gorgeous views and glamorous service.
  • For something a bit different, stay at the five-star Rebak Island Resort on its own private island. With its 390 acres covered in rainforest and beaches, this resort promises seclusion and, if you want it, adventure.
