Rome flight FAQs

Your flight time to Rome depends on where you’re flying from and which airport you’re landing in. A journey from New York to Rome will take just over eleven hours including a connection in London, while Los Angeles to Rome takes just over 14 hours with a connection.

The most popular time to visit is during the city’s spring and summer months, so you can avoid the crowds and sweltering temperatures by booking your flights during the autumn or winter.

You can make a trip to Rome fit any budget. You can explore the city by foot, as many of its iconic sights are within walking distance of each other. For affordable dining, try local trattorias or street food venues serving traditional Roman dishes like fried rice balls known as suppli, and pizza al taglio – pizza by the slice. Rome also has water fountains around every corner, so take a refillable bottle for a cost-effective and eco-friendly experience. Lastly, take advantage of free attractions, such as its many churches and the beautiful parks, like Villa Borghese, to make the most of your visit without breaking the bank. For the sights that aren’t free, students with valid student IDs may be able to save on entry fees.

Once you touch down at Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO), you’re only a short journey away from the action. The train takes about 30 minutes to the city centre, while the airport shuttle bus to Termini Station takes around 45 minutes. Taxis can easily be found outside the airport terminal and can get you to the city centre in about 30 minutes.

You can also hire a car with British Airways if you want to see more of what Italy has to offer. You’ll receive great benefits, with all mandatory charges included and 24-hour customer support, plus you’ll collect Avios points on every rental.

Visit Rome for its captivating mix of ancient architecture and vibrant street art, which can be spotted across the city. Rome’s lively markets, like the Campo de’ Fiori and Testaccio Market, offer fresh produce and local delicacies. Rome also takes the title of the city with the most churches in the world – with over 900 to discover – so expect to see them on almost every street. Visit the Basilica di San Clemente, a three-tiered complex showcasing the layers of Rome’s history, with its 12th-century basilica and the ancient Roman house and Mithraic temple beneath. Then walk along Via Appia Antica, one of Rome’s oldest roads, and see the ancient ruins and tombs that line it.
