Maldives flight FAQs

A flight from London to Velana International Airport takes around 10 hours and 20 minutes.

British Airways flies direct from Heathrow Airport (LHR) to Velana International Airport (MLE).

The most popular time to visit the Maldives is during the dry season between December and March. The price of accommodation and flights tends to be higher at this time of year, but there are great deals to be found during the months either side of this period. Travel in April and November, when the islands experience light showers during the beginning and end of the rainy season, and you’ll still be able to enjoy up to eight hours of sunshine a day with lower prices. Temperatures remain in the high 20s too.

The Maldives’ dry season runs between December and March, when temperatures hover around 30°C. Humidity is at its lowest during this period, making it an ideal destination for those seeking some winter sun.

The Maldives has rightly earned a reputation for luxury, but visitors can also find budget-friendly accommodation across the islands. Opt for a beach villa rather than an overwater cabin if you’re looking to cut the cost of your stay on one of the resort islands. You’ll also find well-priced, simple guesthouses on local islands such as Gulhi and Maafushi. Islands closer to the capital of Male, which can be accessed by speedboat transfer, are less expensive to reach. More remote islands might require a seaplane, which can add to the cost of your trip.

When you arrive in the Maldives, you’ll touchdown at Velana International Airport, also known as Malé International Airport. It’s not actually on Malé, but the neighbouring island of Hulhule. From here you’ll be able to take a speedboat, seaplane or scheduled flight to your resort. It’s best to book a transfer in advance if it’s not already included in the price of your accommodation.

When you arrive at your resort, it’s likely you’ll be able to walk wherever you want to go, but most have bicycles available for guests to ride around the islands too.

Whether you’re looking for a little luxury, a fun-filled family getaway or you’re a solo traveller in search of some adventure, the Maldives offers it all. You’ll just need to choose the island that’s right for your budget. Baa Atoll is home to a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and the world’s largest population of manta rays, while the neighbouring Raa Atoll is where divers head to explore submerged islands. Some of the Maldives’ best surf spots are found in the North Malé Atoll, while the South Male Atoll is where you’ll find some of the more developed islands, and the Shaviyani Atoll is the place to go for real peace and quiet.

Citizens of the UK and Ireland and EU passport holders may require a visa to visit the Maldives, depending on how long they stay. You can find out more about visa requirements for all the countries we fly to at the IATA Travel Centre.
