Japan holidays

Japan is something else. It’s a country of futuristic cities and quiet mountainside towns, where whizz-kid technology meets time-honoured traditions. Delight in experiences you can only have here: have sushi served by a robot in Tokyo, see snow-capped Mount Fuji from the window of a bullet train and walk through thousands of torii gates in the ancient capital Kyoto.

Spirited cities and spiritual islands

Take part in traditions like tea ceremonies and kimono fittings. Visit an onsen town in the mountains to bathe in a bubbling natural hot spring. If you visit in spring, you might catch sakura season, when festivals pop up alongside blushing cherry blossoms. Hanami is the tradition of flower viewing – you won’t be able to resist joining in.

Also irresistible are the hot, heart-warming bowls of ramen whipped up behind sliding doors, the delicately crisp tempura served with udon noodles and the katsu curries soaked into rice. Japan is home to one of the most exciting and influential cuisines in the world. Ready to dig in? Book your flights to Japan now. British Airways flies direct to Tokyo. Our partnerships with Finnair, Iberia and Japan Airlines allow you to fly to several Japanese cities with just one stop.

Japan holiday FAQs

  1. Take your pick in Tokyo, where the options seem endless. See the vending machines selling drinks, hot ramen, even Pokemon cards… you never know what you’ll find. To get a sense of the city’s unbelievable size, stand on a viewing platform like Shibuya Sky. Then, when you’re ready to get lively, belt your heart out in a karaoke booth or pop to an izakaya spot like Golden Gai.
  2. See what’s cooking in Osaka, also known as the nation’s kitchen. Dotonbori’s dozens of street food stalls split your attention with temptations like chewy cheese coins and takoyaki octopus balls topped with tangy mayo. Alternatively, sit in a restaurant to make your own okonomiyaki, a type of savoury pancake, on a tabletop grill.
  3. Discover old Japan in Kyoto, a city that served as the capital for more than 1,000 years. Walk through thousands of vermilion torii gates climbing a quiet mountain at Fushimi Inari Shrine or see Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion) gleaming over a pond. Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is another must-see, although you should arrive early to avoid large crowds.
  4. Spend a day (or a whole week, even) at a theme park. Japan’s love of cartoons and pop culture, joined with its technological prowess, means it takes theme parks pretty seriously. Tokyo Disneyland   is full of classic Disney magic while Tokyo DisneySea is the only park of its kind in the world. Over in Osaka, Universal Studios Japan introduced the first Super Nintendo World.
  5. Visit Hiroshima. Walk through forested mountains and lay on golden beaches alongside the Seto Inland Sea. Walk around Peace Memorial Park  and look up at the Atomic Bomb Dome, to take in the area’s tragic history. Then glide over to Miyajima on a boat. See the Itsukushima – a floating shrine with a striking red torii gate – looking like it’s rising from rippling water as you approach.
