Overview
Pestana Churchill Bay is a charming, boutique hotel, situated on the seafront in the small Madeiran town of Camara de Lobos. It offers a good collection of rooms with views over the bay or the town, an on-site restaurant and bar, massage room and sauna and a fabulous rooftop pool boasting panoramic views across the bay.
This historic, low-rise property wraps itself around the picturesque fishing bay of Camera de Lobos, made famous by Winston Churchill’s paintings of the area. It’s located less than six miles from Madeira’s capital Funchal, where you can wander around the old lanes and pretty squares, take a seat at one of the many street cafes or sledge ride down Monte Hill in a wicker chair. Monte is reached via a cable car that connects the Old Town of Funchal with Monte Palace Tropical Gardens Park and the Botanical Gardens, from which you’ll receive the most amazing view across Funchal. Madeira Airport (also known as Funchal Airport) is approximately 16 miles from the hotel.
The rooms are housed across two buildings; one being the former and original Council Chamber, the second is the newer fish market building. Winston Churchill references can be found in both areas including inspirational quotes, antiques and the famous replica seascapes on the walls. Both bay and village views are offered (depending on the building) as well as free Wi-Fi, LCD TV, tea- and coffee-making facilities, in-room safe and minibar. They are decorated in soft pastel colours and feature a comfy queen-size bed and a lovely, modern bathroom with a shower.

Pier One is the hotel’s on-site restaurant open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Fresh local dishes of ‘pau de louro’ (skewered grilled beef) can be savoured here or take a seat on the attractive outdoor terrace where a glass of poncha (a spirit-based drink with brandy and lemon juice) or a niquita – a regional cocktail with pineapple ice cream and beer, are best enjoyed. Alternatively, the town itself offers a great selection of restaurants and bars to explore at your leisure.
