Overview
Set in a prime location in Valletta, Grand Hotel Excelsior Malta is a large stately hotel, perfect for exploring the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its pool area is backed by 16th Century fortified walls and looks out to Marsamxett Harbour and Manoel Island – it’s a wonderful spot to watch the boats go by. The decor is on the classic side, though is comfortable, clean and well equipped. There’s an indoor and outdoor pool, a private beach area, a spa for when you want to relax and excellent transport links for exploring. The hotel has its own private marina where impressive yachts often dock, plus there’s a tempting selection of cuisine to suit all tastes.
The hotel’s enviable location places itself just outside of Valletta’s city walls, an excellent base for exploring this UNESCO World Heritage site. Valletta is bursting with history, from its 16th Century Bastian walls and fortified churches to its traditional Luzzu fishing boats bobbing in the harbour. The narrow streets are full of charm, as well as cafes, restaurants and shops. The City Gate and bus terminal are 600 metres and 700 metres away, easily reached on foot – though the hotel offers a shuttle into the centre if needed. Nearby Manoel Island is certainly worth a visit, home to a fort built by the knights of Malta between 1723 and 1755, and a known filming location for Game of Thrones. Malta International Airport is five miles away.
Rooms here are spacious and airy. They are traditionally decorated with dark woods and patterned carpets and are well furnished with king-size or twin beds and desks. Most rooms have balconies with either inland, partial sea or full sea views, with a table and chairs to admire the vistas. Deluxe rooms are generous, and each have a balcony. Deluxe Rooms with Terrace boast a larger outdoor space with panoramic views. For a higher floor and an enviable outlook opt for a Superior Room.
