Living la dolce vita
Fly to Italy with British Airways and decide what you want to see first.
Rome, the capital, is a good place to start, with a line-up that includes the Colosseum and the Pantheon. You can tick off the world’s smallest country on the same trip by hopping over to Vatican City, the home of the Catholic church.
In Florence, see Renaissance artwork like Michaelangelo’s famous sculpture David, or make for Pompeii to visit the volcanic ruins of an ancient city.
The Amalfi Coast is a picturesque stretch of coastline dotted with pastel buildings, lemon tree groves and vineyards. If you like being by the water, try the Lakes – Como and Garda both attract the who’s who of Hollywood, as well as keen adventurers who escape into the mountains during both the ski and summer seasons. Italy flight FAQs
A flight from London to one of Italy’s cities takes between two to three hours, depending on where you’re travelling to.
British Airways flies to Italy from three London airports, including London Heathrow, London Gatwick and London City.
Italy is famous for its hot Mediterranean summers, so flight prices are higher during this time. You can expect to pay more from late spring until the end of September, so if you plan your Italian getaway for autumn or spring, you’re more likely to save.
Whether you’re enjoying an Aperol overlooking Tuscany’s rolling hills or eating your way through the restaurants in one of the cities, Italy’s been around long enough to offer something wonderful during every season. It truly comes alive during the summer, when swimming is essential for cooling off, locals celebrate at festivals and the wine regions host vineyard tours.
You can make a trip to Italy fit any budget, but there are a few handy ways to save a few euro for your spending money. Skip the restaurants that cater for tourists and instead head to a trattoria or osteria, where the emphasis is on local dishes and the setting isn’t as formal. It’s also safe to drink tap water, so take a refillable water bottle and you can save on buying bottled.
Opt for getting your steps in when exploring the cities rather than taking cabs, or hop on public transport to get around, and check for walking tours to fill you in on the history as you wander – many are free or cheap to join.
Italy’s main cities have plenty of public transport options for getting around to see all the big sights. There’s also a very efficient train system that links lots of the major cities.
The easiest way to get around Italy is by car. You can hire a car with British Airways and you’ll receive great benefits, with all mandatory charges included and 24-hour customer support, plus you’ll collect Avios points on every rental.
When it comes to iconic locations, Italy’s got just as many must-visit spots as it has unique pasta shapes – but that really is just the start of its charms. Discover a country with a history that’s played a huge part in influencing the modern world, from its fashion and opera houses to its array of cheeses, gelato flavours and luxury cars. Prepare to be whisked away by the magic of la dolce vita. You’ll definitely be back for more, even if you don’t manage to throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain.
You can book a hand baggage-only ticket or make the most of our generous baggage allowance. If you choose economy standard or one of our British Airways Holidays’ packages, each passenger can check in a bag weighing up to 23kg – in addition to a handbag, laptop case or other small bag. Families travelling in any cabin with younger children can also check in one car seat and one fully collapsible pushchair. Read more about baggage allowances for children.
If you’re flying in our business cabin, you can check in two bags weighing up to 32kg each. Read our baggage guide for full details.
Citizens of the UK and Ireland and EU passport holders do not need a visa to visit Italy, but they will need to hold a valid UK passport with at least six months validity. If you hold a passport from a country or territory outside of these areas, you may need to apply for a visa before you travel. You can find out more about visa requirements for all the countries we fly to at the IATA Travel Centre.
Discover outstanding service from the moment you book. Choose to fly with hand baggage only or pick a price that includes a 23kg checked baggage allowance and free seat selection 24 hours before you fly. On board you’ll find HEPA-filtered air, quality on-board catering and a warm, uniquely British welcome.
Simply relax and let us take care of you, every step of the way.
