Explore the uncompleted Roman Temple of Hercules, 850m above sea level, and enjoy panoramic views of the capital and its 6,000-seater ancient theatre below.

Jordan flight FAQs

A flight from London to Amman’s Queen Alia International Airport takes approximately five hours and 10 minutes.

We fly to Jordan from London Heathrow Airport.

December to February is the best time to visit Jordan if you’re travelling on a budget. However, winter weather is typically cool and wet, so it’s best to prepare for indoor activities. June to August is also a good time to seek out cheaper flights. Temperatures over the summer can rise above 40°C, so sightseeing is best done early in the morning. August is a great time for stargazing, and enjoying rooftop bars in the evenings.

The best months to visit are either spring, between March and May, and autumn between September and November. The pleasant weather makes these periods an ideal time for touring historical sites, hiking, cycling, rock climbing and camping. During the autumn months the Red Sea stays warm all the way through until November, and you’ll be able to enjoy some late summer snorkelling and diving. It’s worth remembering that if you travel during the month of Ramadan, services, restaurant opening hours and alcohol sales may be affected.

While Jordan is not known for being a budget destination, well-priced accommodation is available, including hostels.

If you’re heading to major attractions such as Petra, Aqaba and Wadi Rum, take a bus and explore the sights yourself, rather than hiring a private guide to drive you there. Buses on the main routes are air-conditioned.

For those on a budget, opt for a day pass to the Dead Sea resorts, rather than an overnight stay.

For an authentic Middle Eastern experience, head to one the city’s many traditional souks and hone your bargaining skills. Visit the maze-like narrow lanes of the Souk el-Sagha, Amman’s Gold Market, where you can pick up some affordable jewellery.

Buses from Amman International Airport run every 30 minutes to Abdali, the commercial district of Amman. Fixed-price taxis are also available.

Once you’re in the city centre, cabs are a popular form of transport for getting around. Although hilly, walking is a great way to see the sights.

Air-conditioned JETT buses travel from Amman to Petra, and take four hours. Alternatively, book a guided tour and transport will be arranged. The journey from Amman to the Dead Sea takes around an hour by bus. Organised group tours include pick up, or you can book a private transfer.

You can also hire a car with British Airways if you want to see more of what Jordan has to offer. You’ll receive great benefits, with all mandatory charges included and 24-hour customer support, plus you’ll collect Avios points on every rental.

Jordan is well-known for its historic sights and Dead Sea resorts. But there is so much more to explore beyond Petra’s ‘Rose City’. Just an hour and a half east of Amman is the Shaumari Wildlife Reserve, where you can spot wild Arabian oryx and gazelles on a safari through the park. If you’re up for a real adventure and feeling active, join the Jordan Cycle Trail, a 700km journey from Umm Qais in the north all the way to the Red Sea in the south. Whatever activities feature on your itinerary, the local cuisine is sure to play a big part. Feast on a Mansaf lamb casserole and Maqluba, a fragrant Middle Eastern rice dish. Join a cookery course to learn how to make them yourself and bring the flavours of Jordan home with you.
