Malaysia flight FAQs
A flight from London to Kuala Lumpur International Airport takes approximately 13 hours.
British Airways flies to Kuala Lumpur from London Heathrow Airport.
The most popular time to visit Kuala Lumpur is during the summer and winter months, so look for flights in spring or autumn if you’re travelling on a budget. These are also good times to visit Borneo and Langkawi. The rainy season runs between April and October, but the must-see attractions are often quieter at this time of year, and you’ll find great deals at the islands’ top resorts. Use our low fare finder to find the cheapest time to visit Malaysia.
It depends where you’re going. Kuala Lumpur is a great year-round destination, while Borneo is best to visit during its dry season, between March and October. Humidity is low at this time of year, giving you the perfect opportunity for exploring Borneo’s rainforests and enjoying the beaches.
The dry season in Langkawi falls from November to March, so it’s the ideal time to get out and discover the tropical landscape. Just bear in mind that demand for hotels and tours is at its highest during this period. The start and end of the season are excellent times to get the best of the weather with fewer crowds.
You can make a trip to Malaysia fit any budget. Kuala Lumpur is known for offering some of the most affordable luxury hotels in the world, and you can dig in to delicious dishes at one of the many local market stalls. Don’t miss free attractions like the Batu Caves or National Visual Arts Gallery either. Langkawi was given duty-free status in 1987, and since then has earned a reputation for being a great place to pick up bargain clothing, perfume, cosmetics and electronics. There’s also no shortage of well-priced accommodation and dining options in Borneo’s main cities of Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan.
Once you touch down at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, you’re only a 45-minute taxi ride from the city centre. The airport bus service is a cheap alternative and takes around an hour. Or you can catch the express train to reach the city centre in 30 minutes.
The quickest and easiest way to travel onwards to Borneo is by flying from mainland Malaysia to Kota Kinabalu or Sandakan. The islands of the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park are then easily accessible from the Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal in Kota Kinabalu, where a number of boat operators can be found.
A taxi is the best way to get from Langkawi Airport to your resort, and to get around the island. Visitors can also hire scooters and bicycles.
You can also hire a car with British Airways if you want to see more of what Malaysia has to offer. You’ll receive great benefits, with all mandatory charges included and 24-hour customer support, plus you’ll collect Avios points on every rental.
As well as being an exhilarating city, Kuala Lumpur is also the perfect point from which to visit the surrounding regions and some of Malaysia’s finest and lesser-known islands. In between here and Langkawi lies Penang, famous for its food scene and carnivals. Take a tour of George Town’s famous Blue Mansion and wander the Tropical Spice Garden. Or head east out of the city to the coastal town of Kuala Besut. From there, take a boat and in under an hour you’ll reach the Perhentian Islands, which offer some of the country’s best snorkelling and diving sites.
Citizens of the UK and Ireland and EU passport holders may require a visa to visit Malaysia, depending on how long they stay. You can find out more about visa requirements for all the countries we fly to on our visa information page.
