Qatar Airways flies to Oman from London Heathrow and London Gatwick.
The best time to find good deals on flights to Oman is outside of the peak season that runs from October to March. The desert climate does mean it gets extremely hot during the summer, although Salalah in the Dhofar region experiences its rainy season, making it an excellent time to hike through the tropical landscape, seasonal waterfalls and banana plantations that surround Oman’s second city. It’s also a great time to seek out cheaper accommodation and tours.
Oman’s peak season runs between October and March, with the cooler temperature ideal for outdoor activities including hiking, visiting the beaches and desert camping.
June to September is the rainy season in Salalah, and a perfect time to explore the region’s natural beauty. Visitors can attend the city's annual festival which showcases traditional performances, dances and Omani cuisine.
It’s worth checking the dates of key Muslim holidays such as Ramadan and Eid. The dates shift in the Western calendar every year, but usually mean that restaurants and some attractions are closed during the day.
Oman is a country that caters to all budgets. Alongside the five-star international hotels you can find well-priced guesthouses and local accommodation in the main cities. There are also budget desert camps in addition to the luxury options that offer air-conditioned tents and even swimming pools.
Wild camping is also permitted across most public areas, meaning backpackers can pitch a tent at beaches and beauty spots for free. Oman is generally known for being safe, making camping a wallet-friendly option.
You can also visit one of Oman’s natural wonders for free. Head to Wadi Bani Khalid, south of Muscat, to visit a true desert oasis, where freshwater streams create palm-fringed pools that visitors can swim in.
If you’re travelling on a budget, opt to move around independently. Most attractions can be visited without the need for a guide.
Once you touch down at Muscat International Airport you can catch a bus down the Sultan Qaboos Highway, or hop in a taxi which will get you to the city centre in around 10 minutes.
Cabs are a quick and convenient way to get around Oman’s main cities, although they’re unmetered and fares should be agreed in advance.
You can also hire a car with British Airways if you want to see more of what Oman has to offer. You’ll receive great benefits, with all mandatory charges included and 24-hour customer support, plus you’ll collect Avios points on every rental.
Oman is the third-largest country in the Arabian Peninsula, but much less glitzy than its neighbours Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Instead, it’s most popular for its mountains, wild canyons and coastline, which stretches for almost 2,000 miles. Its cities are full of striking architecture, buzzing souks, and authentic Omani restaurants. Visit early in the year and you might be in time for the Muscat Festival, when the city becomes an open-air carnival with traditional music, stage shows, local cuisine and fireworks.
